AI agents have become a hot topic for applied AI as the chase for value adding systems has begun. The added value to expect lies in the feature of autonomous decision making in, for example, purchasing agents. By incorporating payment functions, such applications need to meet highest standards of accountability. Market as well as regulative acceptance call for comprehensive clarity about the way they operate, in particular about the fundamental intelligence concept they employ. Typically, this will be a composition of epistemic evidence (rules) and empirical experience (patterns), i. e. an adequate realization of hybrid intelligence. What does that mean?
Without rules based on epistemic evidence, our entire technological base would be neither thinkable nor realizable. And this applies also to any organised acting we undertake in our all days life. Such rules are what natural sciences are made of. According to I. Kant, they rest upon causality, which he posted to be the fundamental principle enabling the generation of knowledge, hence the establishment of rules. The strong causality concept in natural sciences requests for a logically valid implicaton of cause and effect, the effect must be a necessary consequence of the cause: If I release the stone in my hand, it falls down to the ground in every case, and not only in, say, 80% of all cases. Or, the other way round: if I release the something in my hand and it rises into the air, special circumstances must apply, like the something is a balloon filled with warm air. In our all days practice, however, we often are satisfied to rely on weak causality: if i reduce the price of my product, sales will rise. This is not necessarily the case, (even though we might say „of course, that is logical“), but it is sufficiently probable for our acting successfully. In reality, though, this is not causality, but (more or less strong) correlation instead: not each interested one will buy the product, but a sufficient statistical number will do.
The challenge for AI agents is to combine causality based intelligence (domain knowledge, inference) and correlation based intelligence (empirical data analysis, algorithmic calculation) most effectively. Generative AI can provide suitable tools. Initial development and ongoing adaptation require sound understanding of the underlying intelligence concept. Market acceptance will depend on trusting users who are aware of the underlying intelligence concept.

A Resonance-Based Framework for Hybrid Intelligence and Accountable AI Agents
The current debate on AI agents rightly focuses on autonomy, accountability, and trust. As soon as agents are empowered to make decisions with real-world consequences—such as purchasing, contracting, or allocating resources—the underlying intelligence model becomes a matter of societal relevance, not merely technical performance.
At the core of this challenge lies the need to integrate causal intelligence and correlational intelligence in a transparent and controllable way.
Causality-based intelligence—grounded in epistemic rules, domain knowledge, and inference—provides stability, predictability, and explainability. It is the foundation of natural sciences and engineered systems, and, as Kant already argued, the precondition for knowledge generation itself. Without such rule-based structures, neither technology nor responsible action is possible.
Correlation-based intelligence—derived from empirical data, pattern recognition, and probabilistic learning—adds adaptability, contextual sensitivity, and practical effectiveness in complex, open environments. It reflects how humans often act under uncertainty, relying on sufficient probability rather than strict necessity.
Most current AI systems treat this integration implicitly and technically. The McQuirey Atlas proposes a different approach: a structural, explicit framework that makes this integration observable, navigable, and governable.

A resonance-based framework like the McQuirey Atlas allows:
- designers to know what kind of intelligence is active,
- users to know where they stand,
- regulators to assess scope, limits, and responsibility,
- and systems themselves to support self-reset and boundary awareness, rather than unchecked optimization.
In this sense, the Atlas does not replace hybrid intelligence—it makes it legible, governable, and ethically operable.
For future AI agents in sensitive domains, this shift—from implicit intelligence to structurally explicit intelligence—may be decisive for long-term societal acceptance.
