The Digital Assembly 2019 is a forum for stakeholders to take stock of the achievements of the Digital Single Market Strategy, draw lessons and to exchange views on the contours of a future digital policy. The event is also a great opportunity to showcase how digital is transforming our societies and economies, and how it can help bring positive change to our lives. It is co-organised by the European Commission and the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Artificial Intelligence will feature in workshops and plenary sessions, as a key area to boost leadership and give Europe a competitive advantage in the international scene. Europe has strong research and a thriving deep-tech community, with many promising start-ups. However, our key trading partners are out-investing and out-competing the EU in areas such as artificial intelligence, big data, supercomputing, and cyber security, which makes Europe vulnerable and increasingly dependent. The question for discussion is what can be done to ensure that Europe is not just a user of key technologies developed elsewhere, which may not always reflect our values and interests, but how can it establish and/or regain technology leadership?
