In the context of the European Week of Regions and Cities 2020, the workshop "Reboot your city in a circular way" will be held online on the 20 October 2020 from 9:30 to 11:00am.
Thematic cluster: Green Europe
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on cities and regions and their companies and inhabitants. A survey conducted in Flanders shows that 98% of organisations experienced shortages during the crisis. The good news is that circular strategies work as a vaccine: this high rate could be reduced to 34% for "circular" companies!
The key success factors of a circular economy appear to be the same as those that make a company or a city more resilient to shocks: local & connected, creativity and cooperation.
The crisis exposed the weak points in the dominant linear model and showed how local availability of resources can become critical to the health of a whole population. But this crisis also demonstrated the creativity and solidarity of citizens, companies and policymakers.
In this workshop we look at how cities and regions invested in a circular economic system and how this has made them more resilient during the crisis.
Being the government level closest to citizens, cities can have a huge impact and can be the “trend setters” with profound impact on consumption and other behavioural habits. As such, cities have many opportunities to develop circular models and make this a systemic change in terms of the way they govern. The current uncertain times create an opportunity for a real transformation.
Registrations are open until 27 September 2020.
