Webinar: Navigating Research Ethics and Managing Sensitive Data in Complex European Projects

-

The Knowledge Technologies for Democracy (KT4D) project is investigating how democracy and civic participation can be better facilitated in the face of rapidly changing knowledge technologies - such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data – to enable actors across society to capitalise on the many benefits these technologies can bring in terms of community empowerment, social integration, individual agency, and improved trust in both institutions and technological instruments while identifying and mitigating potential ethical, legal and cultural risks.

This webinar aims to initiate a dialogue addressing the challenges associated with adhering to research ethics best practices, focusing particularly on the protection of user data and pseudonymization.

Performing research in accordance with ethical best practices is a high priority for projects large and small, and is of particular importance within those many projects where human beings are directly engaged, as research subjects, for the co-creation and validation of results, or as participants in project events. Unfortunately, however, the codes and rules for ethical best practice often don’t seem to fit easily with the goals, audiences, contexts, or resources of many transnational, multi-partner projects, such as those funded by the European Horizon programme.

This webinar seeks to open a discussion about the challenges of following research ethics best practices under these conditions, and will deal in particular with data protection and pseudonymisation.  Pseudonymisation is a data processing operation that allows personal data to no longer be attributed to a specific individual without the use of additional information. The current regulatory landscape for Data Protection and Pseudonymisation can be confusing especially in relation to research practices. Therefore in this webinar two highly skilled experts in this area - Alberto Bettiol and Kate Francis of KT4D Partner organisation ICT Legal Consulting - will concretely demonstrate what KT4D is doing in practice for our Use Cases.
