When an artificial intelligence system consults a website, a document, or a knowledge base, it does not read it in the human sense of the word.
It operates differently: it reconstructs an informational reality.
A large share of today’s debates on AI governance still rely on a misleading analogy inherited from our own way of understanding the world. We implicitly assume that if data are reliable, structured, and accessible, then the reasoning derived from them will be reliable as well. This assumption does not hold when confronted with the actual functioning of language models.
A LLM does not perceive the visual hierarchy of a page, the implicit authority of a source, or the institutional intent framing a piece of content. It does not naturally distinguish what belongs to a norm, a warning, a legal framework, or a contextual exception. These elements, obvious to a human reader, only exist for the system if they are explicitly encoded or statistically inferable.
Instead, the model assembles a representation of the world from fragments: text excerpts, partial metadata, implicit structures, semantic proximities, and probabilistic recombinations.
The result is often fluid, coherent, and convincing. But it is a synthetic reconstruction, not a faithful reading of the source.
It is precisely this gap that creates risk.
For a human, meaning emerges as much from what is written as from what surrounds the information: the usage context, the implicit limits, and the actual scope of a statement. For an AI system, these weak signals are frequently lost during the reconstruction process. The resulting risk is not primarily factual error, but a desynchronization between the reconstructed reality produced by the system and the reality of use.
This leads to outputs that are technically plausible, sometimes even formally irreproachable, yet contextually inappropriate. Not because the data are wrong, but because the system has produced a coherent interpretation within a world it has itself reconstructed.
This observation forces a shift in the center of gravity of current debates.
The key question is no longer only:
Is the information correct, structured, and accessible?
It becomes:
How does the system behave when it must recombine this information within a real, constrained, and evolving context?
Two systems can rely on identical data and yet produce radically different behaviors, depending on how they reconstruct meaning, prioritize signals, and fill zones of uncertainty. This is precisely where the boundary lies between reliable assistance and an illusion of reliability.
Making information machine-readable is a necessary condition. But it is not a sufficient one.
Without mechanisms to observe, test, and govern the reconstruction of meaning itself, we risk validating systems that perform perfectly in controlled environments, but silently degrade as soon as the context changes.
Understanding that language models do not consume information but produce a reality from it is a decisive step.
It is at this price that we can design truly robust governance frameworks, capable of aligning performance, safety, and trust in complex environments.

This is exactly where the risk becomes systemic: when a fluent AI reconstruction meets a natural decline in human vigilance.
I fully agree with you on human responsibility.
But for that responsibility to be meaningfully exercised at scale, it must be properly equipped.
The real challenge, in my view, is not to replace human judgment, but to make it possible: by ensuring that AI reconstructions are observable, traceable, and comparable to the real-world context.
It is this articulation between human responsibility and architectures that expose reconstructed meaning that allows us to move beyond the illusion of reliability.

Thank you for your post, I completely agree.
And the problem doesn’t end with how artificial intelligence rebuilds reality. It gets messier when that reconstruction runs into a human world that wants quick, simple, no‑hassle answers.
We live in a time that celebrates immediacy. We want everything right now — instant solutions, short messages, clear certainties. If an answer seems to work a couple of times, we take it as a fact. We stop questioning it, stop checking, stop revising. We just move on.
And that’s where the perfect storm begins.
A technology that doesn’t grasp context the way people do, combined with users who no longer double‑check or take a minute to think, creates the perfect ground for half‑true, half‑twisted, or simply misplaced information to spread. Not always false, but not quite right either.
The issue isn’t just technical. It’s deeply human.
When something sounds coherent and fits what we want to hear, we believe it — not because it’s true but because it’s comfortable. And that comfort, repeated over and over, becomes habit. The habit turns into normal. And what becomes normal ends up driving decisions.
Poorly informed decisions > Lightly thought‑out actions > Real consequences.
Artificial intelligence isn’t dangerous on its own. What’s risky is when we outsource our critical thinking, like it’s someone else’s job. The real danger is confusing something that sounds fluent with something that’s actually true.
When we stop reviewing, we stop thinking. And when we stop thinking, we stop deciding with intention.
That’s why the real challenge isn’t just improving the models.
It’s reclaiming human responsibility toward information.
Because technology can recreate realities — sure.
But only we can decide which of them we want to believe as real.
