The Relevance of Cross-border Coperation (CBC) Processes to Achieve Territorial Cohesion and Sustainable Development

This Conference paper is the result of the 2nd International Congress about the Interdisciplinarity in Social and Human Sciences, held in Faro, Portugal, in 2017.

The paper is based on the latest events taking place in Europe, such as the recent political decisions regarding the terrorism phenomenon, the intentions of implementing new geographic boundaries, the ongoing economic crises and Brexit.

Among other developments, all these conduct us to the urgent need of finding new strategies and approaches, which allow to achieve greater territorial cohesion and cooperation between countries. In this regard, since CBC projects can contribute not only to tackle the aforementioned problems but also to enable the creation of resilient and sustainable cities, the identification of critical factors for territorial success is vital to strengthen the potential synergies and also common objectives for territorial development.
