Welcome to the Working Group 6 - Misuse of Technology Threatening Security and Human Rights!
Thank you for your interest in this Community, which is part of the larger EU-US Trade and Technology Council Community on Futurium. This community was a virtual space for businesses, public authorities, innovators, researchers, civil society, and policymakers to shape the EU and US discussions in the Trade and Technology Council during the period 2021-2024.
The Trade and Technology Council was set up at the June 2021 EU-US summit and served as a forum for the European Union and the United States to coordinate approaches to key global trade, economic, and technology issues and to deepen transatlantic trade and economic relations based on shared democratic values between 2021-2024.
The Misuse of Technology to Threaten Security and Human Rights working group was tasked to combat arbitrary or unlawful surveillance, including on social media platforms. It explored building an effective mechanism to respond to Internet shutdowns, in conjunction with the G7 and other likeminded countries. It further explored work to protect human rights defenders online, and increase transatlantic cooperation to address foreign information manipulation - including disinformation - and interference with democratic processes, while upholding freedom of expression and privacy rights. The working group was tasked to address social scoring systems and to collaborate on projects furthering the development of trustworthy AI.
As this cooperation format is no longer active, this Community will be closed as of 30 September 2026.
