Danish Presidency sets out priorities for a simpler, greener, more competitive EU

The Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU has announced its policy priorities and programme for the next six months after taking over the 6-month rotating presidency from Poland at the beginning of July. Under the slogan ‘A strong Europe in a changing world’, the Danish Presidency will work for a secure, competitive, and green Europe.

Denmark emphasised the need to make it easier for SMEs to grow by cutting red tape and simplifying EU rules. Key reforms include legislation on sustainability reporting, data protection, and the creation of a new SME category, all aimed at building a clearer, more business-friendly framework.

The Danish Presidency is also prioritising the green and digital transitions as drivers of long-term competitiveness. From decarbonising industry to boosting Europe’s strength in artificial intelligence and quantum technologies, the Presidency sees sustainable innovation as essential to resilience and growth.

Environmental policy is another pillar of the Danish programme. Denmark aims to advance a greener future by supporting the Green Deal, reducing emissions, and protecting Europe’s natural resources—all while promoting a low-impact, resource-efficient economy.

📍 These policy goals will come into focus at the SME Assembly 2025, which Denmark will host in Copenhagen from 10–12 November, under the theme “Successful SMEs, Competitive Europe.”
