The Age of Digital Interdependence

The High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation, established by the UN Secretary-General in July 2018 released the report “The Age of Digital Interdependence”.

The panel co-chaired by Melinda Gates and Jack Ma had the goal of identifying modalities for working cooperatively across sectors, disciplines and borders in the digital age making sure that the benefits of digital technology reach all of humanity.

The main outcomes from the report are:

  • a multi-stakeholder approach where civil society, academics, technologists, governments and the private sector must work together to maximize the benefits and minimize the harms of digital technologies;
  • “leaving no one behind” strategy: technology must be inclusive so that more women, young people, rural populations, small businesses and developing countries can benefit;
  • the global need to rethink our education systems to prepare our young people for the future.
