Second Meeting of the Advisory Board – Supporting Cross-Border Data Collection

As part of the Cross-Border Data Collection Project, commissioned by DG REGIO, we have established an Advisory Board to support the project throughout its implementation. The Advisory Board brings together experts from across Europe to provide feedback and support on key methodological choices and strategic directions.

The group is set to meet four times during the project. On 23rd of June we held our second meeting, where we shared updates on project progress and discussed the development of the methodology for collecting and processing data on cross-border workers.

Our exchange focused on several key aspects:
🔹 Definition of the data set – We aim to collect data, on an annual basis, on incoming cross-border workers by work location at NUTS 3 level, by country of residence, citizenship and sex. While the variables under consideration are already ambitious, they are considered feasible. Age group breakdowns, however, are likely unrealistic.

🔹 Description of data sources – Since administrative procedures and legal frameworks vary widely, data sources differ between countries and are not always held by NSIs themselves. We discussed the necessity to present this information in a comprehensive and comparable way, and concluded that a mapping exercise of what NSIs can currently produce will be an important step forward.

🔹 Support for NSIs – Most countries have limited or no experience in producing such data. We reaffirmed the importance of offering clear guidance and possibly additional incentives, including more transparency on which countries have already submitted data.

🔹 Dissemination and user needs – The group reflected on how to best disseminate results, reflecting on the importance of storytelling and practical use cases to show the relevance  of data for policy-makers.

We are grateful to all Advisory Board members for their continued engagement and valuable contributions.
