News from the High-Level Expert Group on AI

The High-Level Expert Group on AI (AI HLEG) continues its work in promoting a Trustworthy and competitive environment for Artificial Intelligence in Europe.

The group met again last Thursday, the 5th of September, to discuss the crucial next steps following the successful delivery of the Ethics Guidelines on Trustworthy AI and the Policy and Investment Recommendations for Trustworthy AI to the European Commission earlier this year. The latter was made public during a milestone event for the European AI community in June, namely the first European AI Alliance Assembly, hosting over 450 members of the European AI community that contributed to the work of the AI HLEG.

The AI HLEG was set up in June 2018 to provide the European Commission with Ethics Guidelines on Trustworthy AI (Deliverable 1) and a set of Policy and Investment Recommendations for Trustworthy AI (Deliverable 2). It has now been agreed to extend the group's mandate to continue building on the work and to increase the granularity and actionability of the deliverables.

These deliverables are subsequently extended to:

Deliverable 3 (or extended deliverable 1) – Aiming to refine the Assessment List that operationalises the Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI. Work on this deliverable has already started with the launch of the Piloting Process last June where over 450 organisations have already registered;

Deliverable 4 (or extended deliverable 2) – Aiming go beyond the 33 horizontal Policy and Investment Recommendations for Trustworthy AI, by  looking at them from a sectorial point of view and going into depth with each sectorial analysis.

The European AI Alliance, steered by the AI HLEG from the start of its mandate, will continue to be the main forum of discussion and to provide feedback for these two new deliverables
