Breakout Room 1: Cooperation on Emerging Technology

The EU and the U.S. are advancing on a variety of work on key critical and emerging technologies. In light of recent developments in AI systems, the transatlantic partners have added special emphasis on generative AI in their work on the Joint Roadmap on Evaluation and Measurement Tools for Trustworthy AI and Risk Management (here). The EU and U.S. have pursued work on the AI Roadmap through the launch of three dedicated expert groups which have now issued a list of 65 key AI terms essential to understanding risk-based approaches to AI (here); and mapped the respective involvement of the EU and U.S. in standardisation activities with the goal of identifying relevant AI-related standards of mutual interest. Also work on semiconductor cooperation, a dedicated 6G roadmap and vision (here), digital ID, a joint Task Force to address open questions on science and technology cooperation in quantum technologies, and standardisation is underway. This breakout room will take stock of the progress made and point to possible next steps and areas for progress.

Breakout Room 2: Human rights and values in the digital environment

Reports on Human Rights Defenders online, strategic EU-U.S. cooperation on Foreign Information Manipulations and Interference (FIMI).

The EU and US continue their work under the TTC to jointly advance our values in the digital environment, in line with the principles set out in the Declaration on the Future of the Internet. In particular, they agreed on a list of high-level principles on the protection and empowerment of minors and data access for researchers (here) and issued a joint statement setting out actions to combat foreign information manipulation and interference in third countries (here), including a standard for structured threat intelligence and capacity building, particularly in Africa and Latin-America.

This breakout room will be a broad debrief on various work strands under the human rights and values agenda and will be followed by a Q&A Session focused on existing and future transatlantic initiatives.
