Climate change is making its presence felt across Europe, posing significant challenges for regions vulnerable to both floods and droughts. One such region is the area along the Drava River, forming the border between Hungary and Croatia. According to the European Drought Observatory, over half of the region experienced soil moisture deficits in 2022, while in 2023, the Drava River reached record-high levels, surpassing the previous 1972 peak by 493 cm. These extreme weather events demand coordinated efforts from both sides of the border. In response to these growing threats, the "Resilient Borders – Enhancing Flood and Drought Resilience Along the River Drava" project was launched, aiming to develop sustainable and long-term solutions to mitigate water-related risks.
Led by Baranya County, partnering up with Virovitica-Podravina County, this cross-border initiative seeks to establish a comprehensive action plan addressing the increasing water management challenges in the Drava basin.
A core component of the project is the promotion of knowledge exchange and collaboration. Through six thematic workshops, experts are identifying viable solutions and working together on a long-term strategy. The goal is to create an action plan that enhances flood protection measures while exploring sustainable methods to reduce drought damage. Data collection and the analysis of best European practices serve as a foundation for future interventions.
A highlight of the initiative will be an international conference, which will not only strengthen professional cooperation but also spotlight the importance of cross-border water management. Participants will share their experiences and co-develop proposals for addressing future challenges.
In the long run, the "Resilient Borders" project will contribute to strengthening the resilience of border regions. The solutions and methods developed can serve as valuable models for other parts of Europe. As a result of the planned measures, local communities will be better prepared to face the impacts of climate change, minimizing both economic and social risks.
Beyond technical solutions, the project places strong emphasis on enhancing cross-border cooperation. This collaborative approach lays the foundation for a flexible and sustainable water management system along the Drava River—one that will serve local residents for years to come. Joint action and shared planning are key to effectively addressing future challenges and preserving the Drava’s valuable natural assets for generations to come.
