The Covid-19 pandemic has reminded us that our welfare, employment and health systems rest on a delicate demographic balance, highlighting the need for a better understanding of demographic dynamics across Europe.

Together with the green and digital transitions, demographic change is shaping the future of Europe.

On 29 April 2021, Commission Vice-President Dubravka Šuica (Vice-President for Democracy and Demography) and Commissioner Mariya Gabriel (Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth) will launch the first edition of the EU Atlas of Demography in a panel discussion with the President of the Committee of the Regions Apostolos Tzitzikostas (TBC) and the Portuguese Minister of State for the Presidency Mariana Vieira da Silva.

During the panel discussion, moderated by Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) Director-General Stephen Quest, the speakers will discuss the cross-cutting nature of demography and the relevance of understanding and anticipating demographic dynamics for all levels of policy-making.

The panel discussion will be followed by a presentation of the tool by the JRC. 

The Atlas of Demography is a new, interactive and multidimensional tool developed by the JRC to visualise, monitor and anticipate demographic change at a very high spatial resolution. It aims at informing several policy areas  - such as health, labour, education, access to services and amenities, territorial and cohesion policies, to name a few - with timely, robust, comparable demographic data and knowledge at the finest level of geographical detail (down to the level of a single municipality) to help target EU policies more closely to the needs of the EU citizens.

The online event will take place under the auspices of the Portuguese Presidency of the EU.
