Joint Danube Survey 5: A Model of Cross-Border Environmental Cooperation

The launch of the Fifth Joint Danube Survey (JDS5) marks a major milestone in transnational water management. Coordinated by the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR), this initiative brings together experts from 14 countries to monitor water quality along the Danube and its tributaries, spanning over 2,800 km.

As the world’s largest surface water monitoring effort, JDS5 reflects the essential role of cross-border collaboration in tackling shared environmental challenges. Through the application of harmonised scientific methods, including innovative tools like environmental DNA analysis and microplastics monitoring, JDS5 provides critical data for the entire Danube basin that will support the update of the Danube River Basin Management Plan in line with the EU Water Framework Directive.

JDS5 illustrates how joint data collection and coordinated policy approaches can strengthen environmental governance across borders serving as a best practice example for integrated river basin management across the EU and beyond.
