Session on the next game changer: General Purpose AI made in Europe
In recent years, the development of large AI models has sparked significant anticipation for their potential impact on the economy and society. These advanced AI technologies hold tremendous promise to revolutionize various industries, thanks to their remarkable capabilities, such as adaptability to diverse tasks and domains. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that, like any AI application, the use of large AI models carries certain risks pertaining to people's safety and fundamental rights.
Europe has demonstrated its capacity to build large language models like Bloom, GPT-SW3, OpenGPT-X, and Luminous, while maintaining a focus on trustworthiness and prioritizing people's safety and fundamental rights. Nevertheless, these European efforts currently face challenges in competing and scaling up against the larger non-European tech companies. This is primarily attributed to the substantial investments required for model development, including extensive computing resources, data access, and a skilled workforce.
To effectively address the opportunities and challenges posed by AI, Europe must unite and define its own path, based on European values, to promote the development and deployment of AI. This session will concentrate on ongoing and future initiatives aimed at creating general-purpose AI systems originating from Europe, which are trustworthy, human-centric, and aligned with European values.
The session will delve into both the technological and infrastructure challenges, such as data access and computing resources, as well as the regulatory challenges within a competitive context.
The session will be introduced with a keynote speech from Lucilla Sioli, Director for AI and Digital Industry at the European Commission.
Under the moderation of Aurore Belfrage, a panel discussion will take place, featuring the following participants:
- Jonas Andrulis, CEO of Aleph Alpha
- Laura Ruotsalainen, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki
- Hinda Haned, Co-director of the Dutch AI Civic Lab at the University of Amsterdam
- Daniel Gillblad, Co-director of AI Sweden
