European AI Excellence and Trust in the world @ExpoDubai

On 15 and 16 March 2022, experts, academics, civil society representatives and artists will join to discuss the European approach for Artificial Intelligence at the World Expo in Dubai.

AI is a means, not an end. It has been around for decades but has reached new capacities fuelled by computing power and data availability. This offers immense potential in areas as diverse as health, transport, energy, agriculture, and tourism or cyber security. However, certain AI applications if used without care, may sometimes create complexity, risk the disruption of activities and processes or even harm human rights.

European AI Excellence and Trust in the world” aims to leverage the international stage offered by Expo Dubai to present how Europe sees the opportunities and complexities that AI may bring as well as what the Commission with its Member States do to build Excellence and Trust. Discussions between experts and policymakers will help to reflect the impact that such efforts have at an international level while a number of artistic installations collected from all around Europe will guide further reflections through a virtual walk.

To facilitate the interaction with the AI community in the frame of the event, the organisers have planned a series of blogposts and open discussions through the European AI Alliance. This enables conference speakers and participants to shape the discussions and to debate next steps on how to advance human-centric AI on the global stage.

Background

Since 2018, the European Commission and its Member States have joined their forces to foster AI excellence from the lab to the market by enabling the development and uptake of AIensuring that AI works for people and building strategic leadership in high-impact sectors. At the same time, Europe has progressed in its human-centric approach by proposing the world’s first legislative framework with requirements for Trustworthy AI.

The event follows the High-Level Conference on AI: from Ambition to Action that was organised with the Slovenian Presidency to follow up on the Proposal for a Regulation laying down harmonised rules on AI and the updated Coordinated Plan on AI, published by the European Commission in April 2021. International experts and representatives of governmental and non-governmental organisations joined the event to show how these documents influence similar initiatives at a global level. The International Outreach for Human-Centric AI (InTouchAI.eu) project is now taking this discussion forward.
