A cross-border European Capital of Culture: new challenges for cohesion policy in the European Week of Regions and Cities!

European Capital of Culture

During the European Week of Regions and Cities, one of the events highlighting the importance and value of cross border cooperation, came from the European Capital of Culture for 2025. For the first time in European history, the European Capital of Culture will consist of two twin cities, Nova Gorica and Gorizia. The motto employed to capture the spirit of the cooperation is  "Go Borderless" and atests to the long planning and cooperation that has been taking place between the Italian and Slovenian cities. Green development, innovation, the value of nature, cultural exchanges, sustainable mobility, public health and other themes are at the core of the cooperation between the twin cities which have also aligned their upcoming cohesion policy funding to enhance their efforts in terms of the Capital of Culture upcoming year.

Nova Gorica and Gorizia constitute a great example of what cross border cooperation can achieve when both sides are committed to planning and implementing a wealth of cooperative measures.

You can watch more details of these efforts as presented during the European Week of Regions and Cities in this link by Minister Aleksander Jevšek and his Italian counterparts Romina Kocina and Barbara Zilli.
