The free movement of people, including the right to live and work in other member states, has brought tremendous advantages to the EU and its citizens. Yet on the margins of this overwhelmingly positive achievement, a dark side of EU citizen mobility has manifested itself as well. Sometimes referred to as “poverty migration” in the media, disadvantaged citizens of some newer member states have taken up residence in wealthier ones – some by choice, others as victims of human trafficking and organised crime. The socio-economic and political challenges associated with the arrival of these groups require special attention, especially at the local level. The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung EU Office invites selected officials to this closeddoor workshop to discuss strategies and exchange best practices. The event is under Chatham House rules and will not be publicized in order to allow participants to express themselves as freely as possible on this delicate topic.
