The European Commission has granted €3.5 million in funding through the Connecting Europe Facility for Energy (CEF) to support planning for the Franco-German hydrogen pipeline projects RHYn and RHYn Interco. These cross-border initiatives, led by France’s NaTran and Germany’s terranets bw and badenovaNETZE, aim to establish a hydrogen-dedicated pipeline connecting the Grand Est region in France to Freiburg im Breisgau in southwest Germany. Set to be operational by 2029, the pipeline will enable the transport of green hydrogen across borders, bolstering Germany’s supply network and contributing to the EU’s broader energy transition goals.

Recognized as Projects of Common Interest (PCIs), RHYn and RHYn Interco are key components of Europe’s future hydrogen infrastructure. The initiative is expected to form part of Germany’s national hydrogen core network, which will span around 9,000 km by 2032. Project leaders highlight the EU’s support as a crucial step toward a secure, sustainable energy system that strengthens cross-border cooperation and advances Europe’s climate and energy resilience.
