Session description

This special session is sponsored and organized by the IEEE Future Directions Committee (FDC) initiative on Symbiotic Autonomous Systems. Symbiotic Autonomous Systems (SAS) that are intelligent cyberphysical systems featuring symbiotic relationships among themselves, humans and the environment, and hence have significant implications on human society as a whole. Together with technology issues related to SAS engineering, evolution and self-adaptation, this field of study includes ethical, societal, legal implications as well as the promotion of novel applications to boost a human-centric economic growth. The goal of this special session is to bring together industry experts and academic researchers working on SAS-related fields, in order to present, explore and discuss current state-of-the-art, open issues and future directions on technologies, methodologies, tools and real-worlds applications relevant to SAS development, verification and validation. In particular, papers are particularly welcome on the following topics:

• Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for SAS: current challenges and dilemmas

• SAS dependability, cyber-social security, threats of information distortion and fake news

• Digital Twins, augmented reality and wearable devices

• Human augmentation, brain machine interfaces and advanced prosthetics

• Internet of Things (IoT), LoRaWAN, 5G, Industry 5.0 and cooperative robots (cobots)

• Drones, autonomous driving and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

• Smart-objects/environments and ambient assisted living

• Self-X technologies, including self-diagnostics, self-adaptation and self-healing

• SAS engineering and certification: standards, guidelines, ethics, social and legal implications
