Workshop series on overtourism

Within the frame of this study, five destination-specific workshops and one concluding workshop at EU-level will be organised. Each workshop will intend to shed light on the specificities of the type of destination in regards to the issues linked to overtourism to better comprehend the linkages between tourism and territorial settings. The following workshops are foreseen:

  • Island destinations workshop hosted in Valletta, Malta on 09.12.2021
  • Urban destinations virtual workshop hosted in Vienna, Austria on 20.01.2022 and 21.01.2021
  • Coastal destinations workshop hosted in Palma de Mallorca, Spain on 23.02.2022 and 24.02.2022
  • Rural destinations workshop hosted at the Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia 17.03.2022 and 18.03.2022
  • Hybrid mountain destinations workshop in Munich on 26 April 2022
  • EU-level workshop, hosted in Brussels, Belgium, on 20 May 2022

The workshops aim to connect tourism stakeholders from destinations to foster peer-to-peer learning on problems and solutions to unbalanced tourism growth. Participants are invited to present solution approaches to unsustainable tourism growth and its environmental and socio-economic impacts on the regions. Moreover, challenges and bottlenecks hindering the mitigation of unbalanced tourism growth are examined. Importantly, the workshops focus on identifying concrete steps for destinations to move towards more sustainable practices and mitigate the impacts of unbalanced tourism growth. During the workshops, participants will likewise test the practical application of proposed indicators for overtourism risk assessment.

Of note, a (tourism) “destination” is to be understood from a larger territorial perspective than a single point on a map or a specific area. A destination is rather understood as a region (following given administrative boundaries or not). It is important to consider a territory as a whole due to the interlinkages between economic sectors, roles and powers of various administrative structures as well as presence of other points of interest or attraction.
