The microprojects developed within the framework of the EGTC Pirineos–Pyrénées are small-scale initiatives implemented jointly by actors located on both sides of the Pyrenees, including Spain and France. They are designed to support direct cooperation between municipalities, associations, schools and other local organisations operating within the same geographical area but under different national administrative systems.
These projects cover a broad range of fields linked to the daily life of the Pyrenean territory, including culture, education, environment, tourism, sport and social cohesion. They are based on joint implementation by cross-border partners and are carried out over a limited duration, with activities structured around shared objectives and common territorial interests.
Among the concrete examples, the microproject “CONTREBANDIERS” develops cross-border sporting and cultural activities such as trail running and mountain biking routes connecting territories in both countries, with a focus on shared mountain heritage and historical mobility across the Pyrenees. “CANFRANC MÉMOIRE” focuses on the industrial and railway heritage of the Canfranc area, bringing together actors from Spain and France to document and promote the shared historical memory of the international railway line and its role in cross-border exchanges. “PYR VTT” works on structuring a continuous cross-border mountain bike itinerary linking Spanish and French trails into a unified route across the Pyrenean massif. “PYRENEARTE” promotes artistic creation in mountain landscapes through exhibitions and cultural actions implemented on both sides of the border. “CIRQUE À DOS” brings together young participants from Spain and France through circus arts activities, combining training, workshops and joint performances in a shared cultural framework. “CARNAVAL’EC” focuses on shared carnival traditions between Béarn and the valley of Ansó, organising joint cultural activities involving music, dance, language and local festive practices.
The implementation of these microprojects has contributed to the establishment of structured cooperation between local actors sharing the same territory. They have enabled the development of regular working relationships between organisations in different countries and the creation of shared practices in fields such as education, culture, environment and tourism within the Pyrenean cross-border area.
The microprojects are financed through resources managed within the EGTC framework, drawing on its own allocated cooperation resources dedicated to supporting cross-border initiatives at local level. This mechanism is distinct from major European territorial cooperation programmes such as Interreg and is designed specifically to enable small-scale, flexible projects that facilitate direct collaboration between local stakeholders in the Pyrenees.
