Senior representatives from Europe’s energy, digital and AI industries gathered on the 19 November in the European Commission’s Berlaymont building for a high-level roundtable on Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence in the Energy Sector.
Hosted by Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy Henna Virkkunen and Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen, the event marked a major political moment in supporting Europe’s digital and energy transition, while advancing new EU initiatives on data, computing and clean energy.
Opening the meeting, EVP Virkkunen said that Europe’s competitiveness will be built on clean energy and digital innovation, not one without the other. She stressed the need to upgrade both physical and digital grid infrastructure and highlighted that AI, high-quality data and predictive digital tools can enhance grid efficiency today, even as Europe accelerates renewables deployment.
Commissioner Jørgensen reiterated the strategic importance of linking the two transitions, warning that there is no AI without energy, and there will be no part of our energy system that will not be impacted by AI. He announced that a Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and AI in the Energy Sector will be presented in early 2026, following extensive stakeholder consultation that drew more than 225 contributions.
The keynote address was delivered by Laura Cozzi, Director for Sustainability, Technology and Outlooks at the International Energy Agency, who presented new data showing exponential growth in global electricity demand from AI-driven data centres and a decline in Europe’s share of global data-centre capacity. She warned that grid connection bottlenecks have become one of Europe’s biggest structural barriers to hosting next-generation AI infrastructure.
The event’s central panel, moderated by DG CONNECT Director-General Roberto Viola and DG ENER Deputy Director-General Mechthild Wörsdörfer, brought together CEOs and technology leaders from Elia Group, Engie Belgium, Schneider Electric, INESC TEC, DATA4 and 1KOMMA5°.
Discussions focused on two reciprocal challenges:
- Energy for AI: how to ensure Europe can sustainably power the rapid growth of data centres and AI computing clusters.
- AI for energy: how AI can make Europe’s grids more flexible, resilient and efficient.

Thank you for providing this important summary of the high-level roundtable.
My recent post expands on one structural aspect — the need for a semantic layer to connect policy intention with data and AI execution.
I hope this perspective contributes to the ongoing 2026 Strategic Roadmap discussions.

Thank you for this clear overview of the Digital Justice Strategy.
One structural challenge appears central: ensuring semantic consistency across 27 judicial systems and 24 languages.
This alignment may become essential for deploying AI tools in courts and legal data spaces.
