Salinisation of coastal aquifers is a major problem for the EU, and in fact globally. It threatens the freshwater supply to coastal zones, where the majority of the people lives, and industrial activity and agriculture is thriving. Major drivers of aquifer salinisation are overpumping of fresh groundwater resources and sea level rise. A review article on salinisation of coastal aquifers in the EU and management options to prevent this has just been published in Open Access Government. The article was written as part of the LIFE-FRESHMAN project. Examples for technical measures to prevent aquifer salinisation or even restore salinised aquifers are presented from Spain and The Netherlands.
