Back from summer break? Time to plan your Border Regions Peer Exchange visit to one of the 10 selected border regions

September is the perfect moment to get back to cross-border business — this year with a deadline you won't want to miss. The European Commission's Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO) and Fundación CEER (FCEER) have opened the call for applications for the Border Regions Peer Exchange on Solving Border Obstacles programme, and applications close soon: 7 September 2026 at 17:00 CEST.

The idea is simple and hands-on: 100 visitors from across Europe will be selected to take part in 10 peer-exchange visits (2-day visit), running between November 2026 and January 2027. Each visit is built around a real b-solutions case — the initiative managed by the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) that identifies and helps resolve legal and administrative obstacles affecting cross-border cooperation — giving participants a first-hand look at how public authorities and other stakeholders have tackled these barriers.

Ten regions, seven key themes

So before the back-to-work rush swallows up the agenda, it's worth carving out time to visit one of these 10 border regions and learn from practical solutions on:

  • Healthcare
  • Public services
  • Transport
  • Environmental management
  • Tourism
  • Social security
  • Territorial governance

Participants will meet the organisations and stakeholders behind the selected cases, discuss the solutions developed, and explore how to adapt them to your own regional contexts.

Who can apply?

The call is open to the European territorial cooperation community linked to Interreg A programmes, including managing authorities, joint secretariats, national, regional and local administrations, universities, research centres, European Groupings of Territorial Cooperation (EGTCs), Euroregions, development agencies, chambers of commerce, and other organisations active in cross-border cooperation.

The programme will provide financial support of up to €750 (lump sum) to cover travel and accommodation costs for the 50 highest-scoring applicants.

Selected visitors will be announced at the end of September.
