Joint Regulations, Smoother Water Tourism – WATREG Workshops Completed!

Within the framework of the WATREG project, a two-day professional workshop series was held on February 17 in Šamorín and February 18 in Győr. The aim was to review the regulatory environment of Hungarian-Slovak cross-border water tourism, identify gaps, and define future development directions.
Šamorín – Focusing on Slovak Experiences The Šamorín meeting included Slovak service providers, local governments, and authorities. Bilingual communication (HU-SK) helped align positions on:

  •  Slovak licensing and safety regulations,
  •  usability of infrastructure along the Danube,
  •  management of border water situations (river crossings, marking systems).

Győr – Hungarian Professional and Official Perspectives The Győr forum brought together water police, water management experts, municipalities, sports federations, and tourism providers. Key topics included:

  •  practical application of Hungarian regulations and reporting obligations,
  •  administrative hurdles and reducing licensing lead times,
  •  infrastructure gaps and opportunities for cooperation with the Slovak side.

Common Lessons and Points for Progress

It was confirmed at both locations: there is an urgent need to harmonize and make rules transparent on both sides of the border. Currently, the biggest challenge for water tourists and providers is the differing administrative requirements. However, the forums provided by the project effectively support the flow of information and the development of long-term cooperation models.

The WATREG workshops successfully brought Hungarian and Slovak stakeholders closer together, identified real-world obstacles in water tourism, and took the first decisive steps toward finding common solutions.
