The European Commission is launching a call for proposals for the next phase of developing a citizen-facing European TV and Video News Portal.
The action will support the piloting of an infrastructure that will enable pan-European multilingual AI media platforms to improve EU citizen’s access to news and public-interest information across the EU.
The call notably aims to make trusted news and public-interest information from all over EU easier to access and use across languages and borders, while helping European media reach wider audiences in a rapidly changing digital environment.
The action contributes to the Commission’s Apply AI Strategy, notably the flagship on pan-European multilingual AI-based media capabilities. It supports broader EU efforts to strengthen the democratic information space, contributing also to the implementation of the European Democracy Shield.
The overall goal is to improve access to reliable news content across Member States, reduce linguistic and cross-border barriers, and lower technical obstacles for participation to such projects, including for smaller and independent media actors.
Beyond translation, the action will also support AI functions that improve usability and discoverability and, where relevant, the reuse and contextualisation of existing or archival material and the pooling of content from different media providers. It may also enable interactive or immersive and infotainment-inspired experiences, as well as experimentation with conversational and agentic access models, such as chatbot or AI-companion style interfaces, and new forms of storytelling or contextualisation.
The action will also support structured coordination within the media sector and with the AI sector, bringing together media, technology and other relevant stakeholders of all sizes to identify needs, foster cooperation and prepare future uptake and scale-up. It will promote transparency, provenance, non-discrimination, and linguistic and cultural diversity, while supporting a more connected, trusted and resilient European media ecosystem.
The call will remain open from 16 April 2026 to 28 May 2026. This call for proposals for a Preparatory Action foresees a maximum EU funding contribution of EUR 5.5 million for a project of up to 24 months.
