We are pleased to announce that Jean-Pierre Halkin, Head of Unit D.2 “Interreg, Cross-Border Cooperation, Internal Borders,” and Ricardo Ferreira, Planning and Programming Officer at the Border Focal Point, will be speaking at the 23rd edition of the “Beyond Borders: Breakfast Debate”, taking place on 12 June 2025.

This edition will explore the BRIDGEforEU Regulation, which seeks to address persistent legal and administrative obstacles in EU border regions. As two of the key figures behind its development and implementation, Mr. Halkin and Mr. Ferreira will offer insight into how this initiative supports more effective, locally driven cross-border solutions.

Jean-Pierre Halkin has led the Interreg-internal-borders unit since 2022, managing over 50 Interreg programmes covering the EU’s internal borders and neighbouring countries. He joined DG REGIO in 2017, previously heading the Competence Centre for macro-regions and interregional cooperation. His earlier work in the EU’s external relations included postings in Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia.

Ricardo Ferreira coordinates the Border Focal Point within DG REGIO, working to remove legal obstacles through initiatives like b-solutions and by promoting knowledge on how these barriers impact border regions. His work helps give visibility and support to local stakeholders navigating complex cross-border challenges.

Together, they will shed light on the institutional priorities and practical tools behind BRIDGEforEU and how the European Commission is supporting smoother, more efficient cooperation across borders.
