The “Study on providing public transport in cross-border regions – mapping of existing services and legal obstacles” has developed 31 case studies which provide in-depth insights into cross-border public transport (CBPT) that was not feasible to include in in the final report. The first set of case studies is now online, covering examples across Europe! You will find detailed analyses of cross-border:
- bus services, e.g. in Gorizia-Nova Gorica (IT-SI), Bedous-Canfranc (FR-ES), Hidasnémeti-Kechnec (HU-SK), Szombathely-Oberwart (HU-AT), Haparanda-Tornio (SE-FI), Verín-Arcos de Valdevez (ES-PT) and the Mozart-Express (AT-DE);
- rail services, for example the cases of Entroncamento-Badajoz (PT-ES), Innsbruck-Brennero (AT-IT), Vienna-Győr (AT-HU), Luxembourg-Rodange-Athus (LU-BE) and the Öresundtrain (DK-SE);
- ferries between Puttgarden and Rødbyhavn (DE-DK) and Greenore and Geencastle (IE-UK); and
- the Saarbahn tram service between Saarbrücken and Sarreguemines (DE-FR) and the tram line 17 Geneva-Annemasse (CH-FR).
Each case study touches upon the main aspects of the CBPT service’s development and provision, including analysis of:
- the geographic context, showing how the service is embedded;
- existing and potential demand for the service;
- main governance and operational provisions for the service, illustrating the frequently specific arrangements;
- obstacles hampering the service development or provision, and solutions to overcome these.
These case studies are an important source of information to inspire stakeholders when searching for suitable CBPT development arrangements. More case studies will become available soon. Browse the publications to find out more!
