In the fifth category of this year’s European Enterprise Promotion Awards, creative efforts to advance Europe’s green transition were recognised at the SME Assembly in Copenhagen. In Category 5: Supporting the Sustainable Transition, the City of Antwerp (Belgium) impressed the jury with its Ecosystem for Sustainable Chemistry, a powerful collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers driving circular, low-carbon innovation.
This category honours initiatives that promote environmental sustainability, circular economy practices, climate neutrality, clean energy, and resource efficiency. Our jury described it as “a strong, large-scale model for sustainable industrial transformation”, applauding its unique demonstration facilities and tangible environmental impact.
Centred on Antwerp’s renowned chemical cluster, the initiative integrates a university innovation hub, a startup incubator, and an industrial pilot zone for sustainable chemistry projects. With investment exceeding €70 million, including EU funding, it demonstrates how industrial ecosystems can align growth with green goals.
