5G, the fifth generation of wireless technology, has the potential to change our world in endless positive ways, unlocking a greener and digital future for us all. The session discussed the latest estimates of the net environmental impact of 5G and best ways to deploy and use 5G based applications and services in order to accelerate climate actions and transition to circular economy. This event is part of the CONNECT University Summer School 2021 on Digital for our Planet that aims to present cutting-edge innovations addressing how can digital technologies be harnessed to tackle climate change, both in terms of a greener digital system, as well as their role in helping reducing carbon emissions across industries. Speakers

Moderator and introductory speech: Peter Stuckmann, Head of Unit Future Connectivity Systems, DG CONNECT, European Commission

Peter is managing the Commission's policy on 5G communication systems and the related research and innovation programme.

Before his appointment as Head of Unit he was managing the office of the Director General of DG CONNECT, Roberto Viola, coordinating the Commission's digital policy initiatives. The portfolio included Digital Single Market, Broadband Policy, Telecoms, Media and Online Policy, the Copyright Reform as well as the EU ICT Research and Innovation Programme.

Between 2010 and 2014 he was Head of Sector "Spectrum Policy", was penholder of main elements of the Commission proposal on the Telecom Single Market and the Roaming regulation, and was responsible for the implementation of the EU telecom rules in Germany and Austria.

Between 2005 and 2010 he coordinated the EU R&D programme leading to the 4G mobile communications standards. Before joining the European Commission in 2004 he has occupied several engineering and management positions in industry, academia and start-ups. He holds engineering and doctoral degrees from RWTH Aachen University, Germany.

  • Rossella Cardone, Head of Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility in Market Area Europe and Latin America, Ericsson

Title of the presentation: 5G enabling climate actions in industries

Rossella Cardone is the Head of Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility at Ericsson Market Area Europe and Latin America. Her role is on advocating the role that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can play in addressing challenges in areas such as energy, climate and education. She is also focused on innovation sustainability projects in public private partnership with clients, leading industrial players, institutions and academia to demonstrate the value of 5G networks, AI and IoT as enablers of an intelligent, sustainable and a fully connected world.

Rossella holds a Master’s degree in Mathematics and a post-graduate education in Probability and Statistics. She has been working in the ICT industry for +20 years, covering several responsibilities in Research and Development, Customer Operations Management, Strategy Innovation and Partnerships, Marketing and Sustainability.

  • Maarit Palovirta, Director Regulatory Affairs, ETNO

Title of the presentation: Greening the Digital Valuechain: role of 5G

Maarit has an extensive expertise in telecoms, broadband and internet matters. She joined ETNO from the Internet Society, where she served as a Senior Manager Europe and where she has acquired strong experience of broadband policies as well as extensive links with internet and tech stakeholders. Maarit also had direct experience of the telecoms business during her 6 years at Cisco Systems and has developed a strong service-oriented, hands-on profile acquired in leading consultancies Interel and Schuman Associates. She also has a strong European academic background from the College of Europe, LSE, King’s College and SciencesPo.

  • Azeddine Gati, Manager of R&D department, Orange Labs

Azeddine Gati, Engineer in telecommunication and signal processing. He received his Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pierre and Marie Curie (Paris VI), Paris, France, in 2000. Since 2001, he has been at Orange Labs, France, where he has been involved in research in the fields of applied electromagnetic for telecommunications systems.

Since 2011, he leads a research program dedicated to energy efficiency of wireless and fixe telecom systems and is currently responsible of a department dedicated to wireless networks in Orange Labs. He has been involved in European Celtic plus OperaNET 1&2 and SooGreen projects and was appointed as vice-chair of the wireless group in GreenTouch initiative. He is currently involved in European Project and HexaX project dedicated to 6G. Dr. Gati is a member of the Union Radio Scientifique International, France. Member of IEEE and senior SEE.
