Strengthening cross‑border cooperation along Slovakia’s borders with Czechia and Poland: the TRILINK project

ESPON has launched the TRILINK project to analyse potential cross‑border functional areas (CBFAs) along Slovakia’s borders with Czechia and Poland, including the tri‑border area where all three countries meet. Scheduled from March to November 2026, this targeted study is carried out under the Living, Working and Travelling Across Borders thematic action plan of the ESPON 2030 programme

TRILINK examines how these border regions can strengthen cooperation and better harness shared development potential by identifying areas with the greatest prospects for integrated action. The analysis considers demographic trends, economic conditions, infrastructure, environmental challenges and stakeholder involvement to generate new, practice‑oriented evidence from local authorities, communities and organisations.

The study aims to pinpoint priority sectors such as tourism, transport connectivity, public services, innovation and environmental management, assess relevant institutional and legal frameworks, and explore how funding sources like Interreg could be mobilised more effectively. Its findings are intended to support future cross‑border policy and programme planning, including preparations for the post‑2027 period, and contribute to more integrated and balanced territorial development in Central Europe.
