Lectures on Cross-Border Governance

 

The Central European Service for Cross-border Initiatives (CESCI) published its newest book with title 'Lectures on Cross-Border Governance' in April 2019. The book contains those workshop lectures that were presented within the frame of the series of Governance Workshops between the period of September 2017 and May 2018 inBudapest. The series of workshops aimed to analyse those topics which are linked to cross-border issues and cross-border governance, like borders, border areas, state sovereignty, cross-border cooperation, geopolitics, Brexit and even post-colonialism.

Lecturers were given at the workshops by Jean Peyrony, Director General of the Mission Opérationnelle Transfrontalière, who presented the institutional aspects of cross-border governance from practical point of view; James W. Scott, Professor of Regional and Border Studies at the Karelian Institute at the University of Eastern Finland, underlined the significance of borders and their effects in physical, mental and narrative spaces;Anssi Paasi, Professor in Geography at Geography Research Unit at the University of Oulu, concentrated on the issues of regions, territories, borders and identity; David Newman, Professor of the Ben Gurion University in Israel, spoke about the borders from geopolitical angles, where power structures play major role and they are part of everyday politics; Katy Hayward, Queen’s University Belfast, presented the issue of cross-border governance within the frames of the process of the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union and the future status of the Irish border as the external frontier of the EU; Olivier Thomas Kramsch, Radboud University in Nijmegen, explained theconcept of ‘b/ordering space’ and appliedsocial constructivist lenses towards borders.

The book is primarily recommended for the academic community, for students of geography and political sciences, and for those readers who are interested in topics, like cross-border cooperation, cross-border governance, borders, boundaries, frontiers, identity, sovereignty, geopolitics, international relations and/or Brexit.
