Welcome to the Working Group 5 - Data Governance and Technology Platforms!

This Community is part of the larger EU-US Trade and Technology Council Community on Futurium, which is a virtual space for businesses, public authorities, innovators, researchers, civil society, and policymakers to shape the EU and US discussions in the Trade and Technology Council together.

The Trade and Technology Council was set up at the June 2021 EU-US summit and serves as a forum for the European Union and the United States to coordinate approaches to key global trade, economic, and technology issues and to deepen transatlantic trade and economic relations based on shared democratic values.

The Data Governance and Technology Platforms working group is tasked to exchange information on our respective approaches to data governance and technology platform governance, seeking consistency and interoperability where feasible. The EU and US intend to exchange information and views regarding current and future regulations in both the European Union and the United States with a goal of effectively addressing shared concerns, while respecting the full regulatory autonomy of the European Union and the United States. Common issues of concern that have been identified include illegal and harmful content and their algorithmic amplification, transparency, and access to platforms’ data for researchers as well as the democratic responsibility of online intermediaries.

On the EU side, this working group is co-led by the Director for Digital Transformation in DG CONNECT, and the Director for Fundamental Rights and Rule of Law in DG JUST.
