The exhibition “European Capital of Culture 2025 – Nova Gorica-Gorizia as a European model of cross-border cooperation” opened on the sidelines of the Winter plenary session of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. The exhibition presents the example of Nova Gorica (Slovenia) and Gorizia (Italy) on cross-border cooperation and European integration. It examines the historical development of the two neighbouring cities, which were divided after the Second World War by an international border that shaped urban planning, mobility and everyday life on both sides.

The exhibition documents the transformation of this border over time, particularly following Slovenia’s accession to the European Union in 2004 and the Schengen Area in 2007, which led to the removal of border controls. These changes enabled closer cooperation in areas such as culture, education, transport and public space. The joint designation of Nova Gorica and Gorizia as European Capital of Culture 2025 is highlighted as a milestone in their shared development and as the first cross-border title of its kind.

By showcasing the evolution of the two cities, the exhibition illustrates how sustained cross-border cooperation can overcome historical divisions and support integration at local level.
