New cross-border rail connection between Finland and Sweden set to open in June 2026

A new cross-border rail connection between Finland and Sweden is set to launch in June 2026, marking the restoration of passenger train services between the two countries after more than three decades. The reopening of the Tornio–Haparanda link represents a historic milestone, reconnecting the Finnish rail network to the wider European system and ending its long-standing relative isolation from continental rail corridors.

The reintroduction of passenger services has required addressing a range of technical, regulatory, and operational obstacles that had long hindered cross-border rail traffic. Differences in rail systems, including track gauge, signalling, and safety certification procedures, posed significant challenges to interoperability. In addition, national regulatory frameworks and administrative procedures created barriers for train operators seeking to run services across the border. These issues were progressively tackled through close bilateral cooperation, targeted infrastructure investments such as electrification and station upgrades, and the alignment of safety and operational standards. Agreements between Finnish and Swedish authorities ultimately enabled the mutual recognition of certifications and simplified cross-border operations, making regular passenger services viable once again. The new service will enable seamless cross-border travel through the twin towns of Tornio and Haparanda, where passengers will be able to transfer easily between Finnish and Swedish trains within a single station area.

Beyond its regional significance, the link is expected to have broader implications for European connectivity and territorial integration. It will allow long-distance rail journeys across the continent, potentially enabling travel routes stretching thousands of kilometres from southern to northern Europe.
