The ESPON COREIB "Collecting and analysing data for the post-27 INTERREG" project, running betweeen January 2025 and March 2026, has recently finalised and published its full set of 48 standardised border profiles, covering all Interreg A cross-border programme areas across Europe. Developed to support the preparation of post-2027 Interreg programmes, these outputs provide a harmonised and comparable evidence base on the territorial, socio-economic, environmental, and governance characteristics of border regions. Each profile compiles extensive quantitative and qualitative data, structured consistently to enable cross-border comparison and to inform strategic reflection at EU, national, and regional levels.
The finalisation of the ESPON COREIB project marks the completion of a large-scale analytical effort resulting in a comprehensive territorial mapping of Europe’s internal and selected external border regions. It delivers 48 cross-border profiles developed within a common methodological framework that ensures coherence in data collection, indicator selection, and analytical structure across all Interreg A programme areas. The profiles draw on harmonised European datasets and integrate indicators covering territorial structure, socio-economic development, labour mobility, accessibility of services, infrastructure, environmental conditions, and governance arrangements. Combining quantitative analysis with cartographic representation and thematic interpretation, the outputs provide a structured and spatially consistent overview of cross-border dynamics across diverse administrative and geographical contexts.
You can find all of the COREIB outputs (border profiles, final report) here.
