The Eurodistrict SaarMoselle has won the 2024 edition of the EGTC award, awarded every two years by the European Committee of the Regions to actions implemented by European Groupings of Territorial Cooperation (EGTCs) across Europe.
The award-winning project, named Babylingua, aimed to create cross-border childcare facilities in the Franco-German region. The project was co-financed by the European Union as part of the Interreg Grande Région programme, and made possible the opening in September 2023 of Kita Salut, the first cross-border early childhood facility in the Saar-Moselle Eurodistrict. The school, which welcomes 133 children in total, 33 of which in the crèche/kindergarten (0-3 years), provides them with the opportunity to grow up in a bilingual and bicultural environment from the earliest age. The school was built in Saarbrücken (Germany) thanks to an investment of EUR 10 million, of which EUR 2.3 million came from the European Regional Development Fund.
The Babylingua project was lauded as an inspiring cross-border success story, involving local and regional authorities from both sides of the border in the design and running of the structure.
