During our latest Apply AI webinar, experts from DG CONNECT, DG GROW, and the AI Data Robotics Association (ADRA) came together to unpack the biggest opportunities and challenges facing European industry as AI supercharges robotics and manufacturing technology. Here are a few highlights:
🔹 From excellence to impact
Challenge: Europe leads in robotics research and innovation and has strong industrial know-how in manufacturing. What we need is to translate this into scalable, AI-driven solutions across factories and value chains.
Opportunity: The Apply AI Strategy shifts from a tech “push” to an end-user “pull” approach by starting with real deployment needs and working towards solutions that manufacturers and industrial users can adopt at scale.
🔹 Turning pilots into deployable solutions
Challenge: Many AI-powered robotics and manufacturing solutions work well in pilots but struggle to move into everyday industrial use.
Opportunity: Apply AI focuses on making solutions deployable and repeatable in real industrial settings through initiatives like the Robotics Catalyst. By strengthening testing, validation and qualification activities within existing European testing and experimentation environments, AI-powered robotics solutions can be assessed against real operational and safety requirements before wider deployment.
🔹 Aligning a diverse ecosystem
Challenge: Startups, technology developers, SMEs and large manufacturers have very different needs, from funding and regulation to data security and IP protection.
Opportunity: Organisations such as ADRA provide a forum for these stakeholders to collaborate, share feedback, and help shape Europe’s robotics agenda alongside policymakers and the European Commission.
