On 24 June 2025, the Benelux Union and ITEM (Institute for Transnational and Euregional cross-border cooperation and Mobility) held a workshop in Brussels to tackle the persistent challenges of cross-border rail travel within Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Presenters highlighted that fragmentation across ticketing systems, safety regulations, languages, infrastructure and governance continues to impede cross-border journeys. Discussions highlighted the gap between EU-level priorities and local mobility needs, with many missing links lying outside major corridors. Each Benelux country presented its strategy to improve international rail, and new initiatives like a cross-border ticketing app were showcased. The event closed with a call for a joint Benelux vision to strengthen cross-border rail coordination and improve passenger experience.
