The Mobile Generation Game – from 1G to 5G and Beyond

-

Curious to see how the transition from 4G to 5G is going, and how it stands to benefit both consumers and businesses across a wide range of industries and sectors?

Previous generations of mobile network technologies primarily addressed the needs of consumers, providing voice and messaging services with 2G, web-browsing with 3G, and higher-speed data and video streaming with 4G.

We will explore why 5G is seen as a game changer, enabling industrial transformations through wireless broadband services provided at gigabit speeds, the support of new types of applications connecting devices and objects (the Internet of Things, IoT), and versatility by way of software-defined network virtualisation allowing innovative business models across multiple sectors (e.g. transport, healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, energy distribution, agriculture, education, tourism, media and entertainment).

Last, while 5G is under development and will be fully operational in the coming years, we will take a look at the research on the next generation of wireless/mobile communications, that is 6G, which has already started at global level. We will connect the dots as to why it is essential that Europe takes a strong role in leading the research in the field in order to enhance its resilience and sovereignty.
