How to repurpose the country's economy toward high-end applications of artificial intelligence ? Finland has an idea. Start by teaching 1 percent of the country's population, or about 55,000 people, the basic concepts at the root of artificial technology, and gradually build on the number over the next few years. Once it reaches that goal, it plans to go further, increasing the share of the population with AI knowhow.
Finland sets a great example how to tackle the question of public comprehension of a technology and at the same time avoids „sleepwalking” into an AI future. AI is rapidly finding its way into economies and societies, so must societies and governments. Finland’s grand AI experiment is also a great push to create more informed democracy.

I think it is an excellent initiative to make citizens able to understand this technology and make eductaed choices about it.
Is there any studies on how the knowledge spread in the population when more and more people become knowledgeable on a topic ? I guess there maybe trickle down effect but is it measurable ?

To tell you the truth I haven't come across such studies so far. I guess that one of goals of this initiative was to make citizens aware of the nature and prevalence of AI. With grounded understanding of AI the consequences of its dynamic development can be mitigated. To check whether it works studies on AI comprehension among public can be carried out. I know that the Center for the Governance of AI at Oxford University conducted studies focusing on Americans public's understanding of AI and views of development of AI.

Thank you for sharing. I took part in the course "Elements of AI", provided by the University of Helsinki and just can say that it was a very well structured introduction into the topic of AI. I event went to the graduation ceremony and it was a very nice to see, that the president of Finland attended the ceremony and gave a commencement speech.
I know teach at the University of Trier about AI (beginners level) and hope to contribute a little bit in provding basic knowledge about AI.

A great initiative. It's important to educate large parts of the public to avoid both irrational fears and naive optimism, but make informed choices.

Finland is lucky enough to have quite educated population. This initative has been ongoing for some time and more and more people globally has been able to learn and elevate their AI litteracy with it. Similar programs are equally welcome around the EU .
Next we have to figure out , how to safely and fairly provide AI products that are good and desirable in the same time that they fulfill the word of law and ethics. Everyone can and should participate into this discussion, right?
Do we need contained testbed for AI with filtered and non-filtered data? Can industry do it alone, or should there be a close public regulation ? Does GDPR apply to AI or just for the use of Data? - there are many open questions that should have ethical questions and law pondered thru allready, but we're just in begun. Standards just does'nt cut it , such a fine tool it is in the otherways.
