ÖIR and Statistics Netherlands at the JRC workshop on measuring flows across EU’ internal borders

On 15-16 May 2025 the Joint Research Centre (JRC) organised a workshop in Ispra, Italy, on the measurement of flows in EU border regions. The workshop was a great opportunity for academics and practitioners to exchange on methods and data available for analysing cross-border dynamics — from commuting patterns and labour market movements to service provision and governance.

As part of the programme, Roland Gaugitsch (ÖIR) and Johan van der Valk (Statistics Netherlands) presented our ongoing project on cross-border worker data collection, which aims to improve the comparability and availability of data across Europe. Reliable statistics on cross-border workers are essential to support evidence-based policymaking in border regions.

The discussions confirmed that while challenges remain, especially in producing consistent data on various cross-border flows, the combination of traditional sources with new methods holds great potential. A key message: data must be driven by policy needs to be truly impactful.
