To reduce the spread of the Coronavirus, many EU member states closed their borders in 2020, triggering controversial discussions. This is especially true for the border regions, which have become strongly economically and culturally interconnected in recent decades especially due to the free movement of people. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, with its nearly 200.000 daily commuters, is a prime example of this cross-border development. Cross-border commuters play a major role in the economies of the surrounding regions in France, Belgium and Germany.

 

What lessons should the border regions learn from last year and the border closures? How can cooperation in the border regions be further developed and possibly expanded despite the Corona pandemic?
