Is Elon Musk right that "AI is our biggest existential threat"?

 Musk is wrong, badly wrong, and his recent opponent, Jack Ma, at the World AI Conference in Shanghai has a deeper vision of AI as ‘going to open a new chapter of the society of the world’…

Musk might be a rather innovative and successful businessman, while having poor understanding of AI as the Next Generation Science & Technology aimed for Superintelligent Systems.

Below a bit extended answer of three parts:

  • What is AI S&T?
  • What is AI S&T About?
  • What is AI S&T Goal?

Broadly, AI makes the next generation Science & Technology which is to model, simulate and produce machine intelligence/intellect/mind, the computational power to process real world data and to retain it as information, knowledge and intelligence to be applied towards complex problem solving and goal-directed behaviors within a dynamic environment of any scale.

It is implemented as Intelligent Things:

I-Entities;

I-Systems;

I-Machines;

I-Robots;

I-Computers;

I-Programs;

I-Algorithms;

I-Platforms;

I-Internet;

I-Environments,

I-Ecosystems, etc.

AI Science builds and organizes Data-Information-Knowledge in the form of models, theories, patterns, hypothesis, testable explanations and predictions about the world using M&S, machine reasoning and learning and deep understanding.

It involves a deep integration of scientific M&S of the formal sciences, natural, social, cognitive and technological sciences, as applied maths and computing and informatics.

AI Technology is the sum of techniques, skills, methods, processes and algorithms, used in the production of autonomous systems with general intelligence.

Systems (e. g. i-machines) applying AI technology and computer algorithms by taking an input-raw big data, changing it according to the system's use, and then producing an output-smart structured data are referred to as AI technology systems or smart technological systems.

AI, with causal machine learning and DNNs, is not just about relying on computer algorithms to process data-information-knowledge to solve problems in a way similar to or much superior to – the human mind.

AI applications are not mere pattern-matching techniques, voice recognition systems, product recommendation platforms or navigation tools.

AI is changing the very science and technology,

Smart Science

Smart Technology

It is like as “to map poverty in Africa, find safer alternatives to conventional rechargeable batteries and … understand our own minds”.

What is AI S&T About?

Artificial intelligence can be classified into two different types of systems:

Analytical/Objective/Scientific AI

2. Subjective/Anthropomorphic AI:

a. Human-inspired, Statistical AI: Automated Machine Learning AI

b. Humanized artificial intelligence.

Analytical/Objective/Scientific AI studies intelligent behavior regardless of how it was accomplished, modeling intelligent processes found in nature, particularly human ones.

Analytical AI involves a computational representation of the world, using general intelligence and learning based on past experience to inform future decisions, knowledge engineering, simulation and scientific modelling.

Scientific modelling - Wikipedia

AI here is any intelligent entity/agent that maps the real world or reflects its environment and follows its own complex goals.

Its maxim: "Artificial intelligence is not, by definition, simulation of human intelligence", McCarthy.

Human-inspired AI describe machines (or computers) that mimic "cognitive" functions that humans associate with the human mind, such as "learning" and "problem solving".

It has elements from cognitive and emotional intelligence; understanding human emotions, in addition to cognitive elements, and considering them in their decision making.

Modern Statistical AI: Automated Machine Learning AI involves automating special tasks: understanding human speech, strategic game systems (such as chess and Go), autonomously operating cars, intelligent routing in content delivery networks, and military simulations.

Humanized AI shows characteristics of all types of competencies (i.e., cognitive, emotional, and social intelligence), is able to be self-conscious and is self-aware in interactions.

Unlike Simon and Newell, promoting Subjective/Anthropomorphic AI, John McCarthy followed Analytical/Objective/Scientific AI, that machines did not need to simulate human thought, but try to find the essence of abstract reasoning and problem-solving, regardless whether people used the same algorithms.

But instead of digital ontology and scientific modeling and simulation, his laboratory at Stanford (SAIL) focused on using formal logic to solve a wide variety of problems, including knowledge representation, planning and learning.

So, a phenomenon known as the AI effect, "AI is whatever hasn't been done yet", comes from a deeply confusing understanding of AI, leading to think as a show of intelligence statistical learning theory applications:

optical character recognition,

computer vision,

speech recognition,

autonomous systems, etc.

What is AI S&T Goal?

AI S&T Goal is a Techno-Human Cyber-Physical Superintelligent System, to be researched, developed, designed and deployed within 10 years maximum.

It is emerging as a composition of superhuman narrow AI/ML/DL systems, tools and algorithms, as Google AlphaGo, IBM Watson, etc., and emerging/exponential technologies.

We are on the historical and dramatic way of creating Narrow Superintelligent AI systems which greatly exceed the cognitive performance of humans in special domains of interest.

Tomorrow will see superintelligent expert systems, superintelligent language translators, superintelligent conversational agents, superintelligent digital assistance systems, superintelligent engineering assistants, superintelligent gamers, superintelligent traders, superintelligent drivers, super-intelligent automation, superintelligent robotic systems, etc.

Super-human narrow artificial intelligences are driven by powerful but special algorithms to solve specific narrow problems, as ML systems, like DeepMind’s AlphaGo combining Deep Learning, Monte-Carlo Tree Search and Reinforcement learning to solve the ancient game of Go.

The road to Superintelligence or Global Intelligence is to pass through super-human narrow intelligence, sentient intelligence, self-aware sentient automation, human level self-conscious automation, self-aware intelligence or super-human general intelligence.

Superintelligence is to involve a Master Algorithm underpinning domain-specific AI, ML, DL and classic algorithms, while guided by the encoded world model (the general data schema of things).
